Let’s Get Started

Here are the tools and materials you need to make cute owls.

  • strips of quilling paper
  • a quilling tool
  • a pair of scissor
  • craft glue
  • a toothpick

Eyes

  1. Use one strip of white quilling paper and half a strip of black quilling paper for each eye.
  2. Use a toothpick to apply a tiny amount of glue to one end of a paper. Join the two strips of paper together.
  3. With a slotted quilling tool, start rolling from the open end of the black quilling paper. Make a tight coil. Finish making the coil by applying a little glue at the end of the white quilling paper.
  4. Repeat with another strip of black and white paper to make another tight coil for the other eye.
  5. Cut a 4cm strip of yellow quilling paper. Roll it up to make a very small coil. Use a pair of pliers (or your fingers) to pinch one end of the coil so that it looks like a small triangular.
  6. The above instructions above are illustrated below in pictures.

The Body

  1. Next, make the body of the owl by joining two strips of blue quilling paper together to make a big closed coil.
  2. Make two closed coils with half a strip of the pink quilling paper for each coil. Press the coils with your fingers to make them into teardrop shapes.
  3. Now we have all the ‘parts,’ it’s time to assemble them together. Apply a little glue on the side of the eyes to stick them together. Put the little yellow coil somewhere in between them.
  4. Use your fingers to shape the blue coil so that it looks like a tulip flower or something similar to the picture below.
  5. Place the blue coil below the two eyes and glue it there.

Next Steps in Making Cute Owls

  1. Join two strips of blue quilling paper together to form a longer strip. You can use more strips of paper if you want to make a bigger or fatter owl!
  2. Wrap the strip of blue paper around the coils. Secure the end of the quilling paper with glue. Apply a little glue to the pink teardrop coils and stick them on each side of the big blue coil to form the wings.
  3. Make a circle with a short strip of blue quilling paper. Flatten the circle and paste it on the top of the quilled owl.
