The History of Paper Quilling

The History of Paper Quilling

Paper quilling is the art of rolling or coiling thin strips of paper into different shapes and using these shapes to form a design. This beautiful form of artwork is known as paper filigree. It is not surprising that this form of art can be traced back to as early as the 13th or 14th century in Europe, where quilled works were used to decorate religious items. Filigree crafts became popular in the 18th century in England and the quilled designs were mainly used as part of the decorations on other crafts, household items and furniture.

Through the centuries, quilling has almost been a forgotten art. Eventhough there are keen crafters and quillers around the world who have been keeping this art form going, not many people knows about paper quilling. In the past two decades, paper quilling has been gaining popularity. This is due of the formation of many local quilling groups and craft clubs that had introduced paper quilling lessons and activities that include quilling items. Many quilling materials are now available online for quillers. Free tutorials and resources on paper quilling are readily available on the internet, too.
