This craft tutorial teaches you how to make these beautiful paper quilled butterflies. The paper quilled butterflies can be used as embellishment in craft projects and other school work.
With strips of quilling paper, make a couple of white teardrop coils. Instructions for making basic quilling coils are in the tutorial How To Make Coils With Quilling Paper . Then, follow the instructions in the next tutorial How To Do Paper Quilling With A Comb and make two looped coils with a comb.
You should end up with coils like the following:
Glue a white teardrop coil in the centre of the looped coil and wrap the coils with another strip of quilling paper (black) to hold the shape.
Make a couple of teardrop coils (purple and black) for the lower wings and a bigger teardrop (white) coil for the thorax of the butterfly.
Assemble all the coils together to form the butterfly and glue the parts together. Attach a small strip of paper (folded in half) for the feelers.
Quilling is the art of rolling or coiling thin strips of paper into different shapes and using these shapes to form a design. It is also known as paper filigree. Not surprising, this form of art can be traced back to as early as the 13th or 14th century in Europe where quilled works were used to decorate religious items. Filigree crafts became popular in the 18th century in England and the quilled designs were mainly used as part of the decorations on other crafts, household items and furniture.
Quilling is almost a forgotten art through the centuries but thankfully, there are keen quillers keeping this art form alive. The art of quilling is now gaining popularity due to the formation of local quilling groups, materials easily available and resources being readily available on the internet.
