Paper quilling is the art of rolling or coiling thin strips of paper into different shapes and using these shapes to form a design. Alternatively, quilling patterns are also known as filigree designs. The handicraft can be traced back to ancient Europe. In the early thirteenth or fourteenth century, works of quilled designs were used to decorate religious products. Filigree crafts were popular in the 18th century in England. Quilled artworks were used as decorations for other crafts and household furniture.
Quilling has been a forgotten art for most centuries. Thankfully, there are keen crafters keeping this art form alive. With the existence of local craft groups and free tutorials circulating on the internet, paper quilling is becoming popular again. Quilling tools and materials are readily available. Resources are all over the internet. You can learn paper quilling for free on RainbowCabin.com, they cover all paper quilling techniques, designs and patterns.
Here’s how to learn the basic steps in paper quilling. In our tutorial on paper quilling shapes and techniques, you’ll learn how to make coils with a strip of quilling paper. You’ll need a paper quilling slotted tool and strips of quilling paper to start quilling.
With a strip of quilling paper, insert one end into the slit of a slotted quilling tool like this:
Start turning the quilling tool to make the quilling paper wrap around the tool to form a coil.
Continue to coiling to the other end of the quilling paper strip. Carefully remove the coil from the tool. Let it unwind a little to form a loose coil.
Apply a little glue to the free end of the paper and stick it to the coil.
Use quilling papers with various colours to make coils of different shapes and sizes. See picture below for different quilled shapes. Make them by pressing and pinching the round coils with your fingers.
