The idea of a cardboard bunny bed would be the perfect piece of furniture for pet rabbits – totally chewable, disposable and demolishable by a destructive bunny!
Almost every bunny parent would love to buy that famous IKEA wooden doll bed for their beloved pet bunny. Most bunnies adore this bed and sleep in it day and night. I had been thinking about getting one for my bunny Lexi, too. Knowing how fussy my little bunny is, whether he will use this wooden bed remains to be seen. If Lexi does not like the IKEA bed, it will be another piece of furniture for him to chew and destroy in his room.
Due to COVID-19, we were in lockdown for several weeks. Non-essential businesses were not open. People can only go out for work or buy food. This had not stopped me from doing my favourite hobby, that is shopping! The only difference: I had to buy everything online now, from groceries, pet food, shoes and frying pans, to bigger items like carpets, a work table, office chair and even solar panels!
The packaging materials that came with the items delivered were piling up. They were mainly cardboard boxes and plastic bubble wraps but there were loads of them. Some of the cardboard pieces were huge and thick. These free materials were waiting for recycling. The cardboard did not have any gloss or colour prints on them, and they were safe for bunnies to chew on. That was what matters most, as Lexi likes to eat everything. Even cardboard tastes delicious to him!
I noted down the dimensions of the actual doll bed from IKEA. After gathering enough pieces of cardboard material, I cut them into the required lengths to build a simple bed frame.
Using a hot glue gun, the cardboard pieces were easy to glue together. I tried not to use too much of the glue just in case Lexi decided to eat the glue as well. It may not be the best looking bed frame, but it did look pretty good! Really surprised at the sturdiness of this little cardboard frame.
Next I joined pieces of corrugated cardboard together to make a strong bed base (bunnies like to jump and flop into bed, too!). My little cardboard bunny bed was almost ready and Lexi came to inspect his new furniture. Like the IKEA doll bed, my cardboard bunny bed needed some real bedding to cover the bare base, so I made a cover out of an old bedsheet. The construction of my bunny bed was complete. Finally, the bed was ready to be moved into Lexi’s bedroom. (yes, he has his own room in the house).
It has been almost eight weeks now. Lexi’s bed is still standing strong despite the top horizontal bars on both ends had slowly disappeared over the weeks. Perhaps Lexi decided to refurbish his bed to suit his taste. Now he can jump onto his bed from all three sides. And, he sleeps in his bed every night.
