Where is Nowhere Else?

Located somewhere on the Eyre Peninsula in the South Australian outback, Nowhere Else is a real place like nowhere else. It’s easy to find the place if you know where it is. Nowhere Else got its name because it was nowhere to be found. In the 1880s, two stockmen were hopelessly lost amongst the she-oaks when they tried to search for the shepherd’s hut. The she-oaks in the area made it difficult for them to see in the distance. As they searched for the hut, one of the men suggested that the hut could be over the hill, and the other man said, “If it’s not over the hill, it’s nowhere else”. They eventually located the hut and the name “Nowhere Else” remained .

The road sign to Nowhere Else is the most sought after souvenir sign in Australia. Standing on the dirt road that actually leads somewhere to Sheringa and Tooligie, the road sign is a target for thieves and souvenir collectors. Having to replace the road sign frequently had become an expensive problem for the council in the area, so it decided to make souvenir versions of the sign that are available for sale.

“Nowhere Else” was also the name of a recent horror movie made by American film makers. The movie tells of a story that happened a few miles from this town. The producers of the movie wanted to give the film a unique kind of terror on a wide landscape but nowhere else to hide.

In Tasmania, another place shares the same strange name as Nowhere Else. This time, Nowhere Else is about 20 minutes from the town of Devonport. Aside from the Nowhere Else Road, there is nothing much in this place, not even a store, pub or toilet, because they are somewhere else.

Today, the two places which share the same name remain like nowhere else.
