A Quail Story by Mr Quail

Hello there, my name is Mr Quail and I am a King Quail. I am the handsome little bird on the right with dark blue feathers on my back. My lovely wife Mrs Quail has dark brown feathers with light coloured streaks and she has been very cranky these few weeks because she told me she was going to have babies.

There are seven eggs in the corner of the bedroom, but where are the babies? Source: lady rain’s photo

She has laid a pile of eggs in our bedroom a few weeks ago and has been sitting on the eggs for several weeks now. I still haven’t seen the babies and I am beginning to wonder where they might be hiding.

Mrs Quail sitting on the eggs, that’s what she does all day long. Boy, is she grumpy!
Mrs Quail has been acting weird and she does not allow me to go into the bedroom during the day, so I just call out to her from outside.

During the day I am not allowed to enter the bedroom or go near those eggs, so I spend my time in the lounge and occasionally peeking in to see what my wife is doing in there. She seems to be mumbling to herself all the time and fussing around those eggs. Boy, is she grumpy!

OMG! What are those little creatures and where do they come from?

One morning Mrs Quail shouts with joy, “They’re here! The babies are here! They look so cute and adorable!”

I ran into the bedroom but I still don’t see any babies.

I rush into the bedroom but I could only see my wife and she said, “Hush, don’t frightened the babies. They are hiding beneath my wings. You have to be careful not to peck at them.”

So, they are the babies my wife was talking about!

We have six girls and one boy. Five of the girls look exactly like their mother, I hope the two yellow babies would grow up and look a bit like me.

I am pretty proud to be a new father right now!

A few hours later, the babies could not wait to leave the bedroom and have their first meal, though they stay close to their mother most of the time. I think they are a little scared of me for the moment.

Sometimes the babies just wanna hide from me. Am I that scary to them?

Eventually, I found out they like to play hide-and-seek.

There are so many little mouths to feed. I am so glad the children learn really quickly how to feed themselves.

The children really love to eat and we have to teach them some manners and how to share their food.

It is so wonderful to see our beautiful children growing up.

We all love to go outside when the weather is sunny and nice. The children would play for hours in the sun and sandbathe in the warm sandpit. They learn to catch a few bugs and ants, that is when they end up fighting most of the time.

The children are growing up so quickly and I think we are getting a bit crowded in our one-bedroom house.

And they just keep on eating and eating so much food …

Our only son, Bruce (on the right), is starting to look a lot like me now, even though his feathers are a bit pale. Until this day, I still could not figure out why he looks like that.

A few months later, we move to a larger new house and everybody has their own space to relax.

All our children eventually grew up and moved out. Blondie (left) and the rest of the girls have their own babies, so I could say we have become proud grandparents.

That’s me and my wife when we just got married. We love playing with sand so much.
